With the United States celebrating Father’s Day on Sunday, and recent events for Boston’s professional teams, like the Bruins’ Stanley Cup win on Wednesday, or the current Red Sox’ streak of wins, is there ever a better time to feature prime spaces to kick back and watch the game? That’s right, we’ve scoured our current inventory of homes to find fantastic media/recreation rooms. (I’ll stay politically correct and not use the colloquial term.) Some of these have made our property videos, and here are some favorites.

The luxurious and classic is the Billiard Room.  We found one in Cumberland and the current owners have furnished this room with a pool table (thus the label “Billiard Room”).  However, the space has wooden detailing with exquisite built-ins, perfectly sized for a big screen TV and the space could have many uses.

A similar atmosphere can be found in Smithfield. Here, a finished basement offers a spacious Great Room and Home Theater. The Great Room has an elegantly crafted built-in wet bar, which is why the current owners chose to mount plasma TVs in the room and furnish it with a poker table. In the theater section, a movie screen drops from the ceiling with the press of a button which highlights some some great gadgetry.

And over on the East Side of Providence, we found a recreational sanctuary in a basement in the form of an enormous Club Room and Media Room/Home Theater. The Club Room has beautiful wooden detailing and moldings as well as a wet bar. Of course, there is the ubiquitous plasma TV over the exquisite fireplace – an excellent idea. The theater has as large a screen as possible for the room, and the electronics are neatly stored in built-in cabinetry. The dimmer controlled lighting over movie posters is a great touch.

These are well done spaces, but wherever your favorite spot is, let’s hope you have a great weekend.

How important is the proficiency of a school system in the decision process for a new home? As the school year draws to a close it is a good time to evaluate that question.

GoLocalProv.com, the online newspaper for Rhode Island,  posted their second annual ranking of public high schools around the state.  During their research on the article, we were asked to give our opinion on that decision process from a first hand experience.  Specifically, they wanted to report on how our clients evaluated the schools information.

According to the article the top five high schools in Rhode Island were East Greenwich, Narragansett, Exeter-West Greenwich, South Kingstown, and Barrington.  To see where your school ranked and the rest of the extensive research visit the golocalprov’s site.

This morning on the Today Show, real estate expert Barbara Corcoran showed affordable properties from across the nation—all under $400,000— and showcased a charming home in our little town of Cumberland. This property is located at 26 Hillside Road, a much admired street which leads to the Arnold Mills historic district. Featuring many nineteenth century Greek Revival, Victorian, and Federal style houses, this is a picturesque part of the community. Large old elms stand in front of many of the residences, and tell the story of centuries past.

Barbara Corcoran founded a large real estate corporation in New York City. She is regularly on the Today Show on NBC with this real estate segment.

Here’s the video clip of the property in Cumberland:

This past July was recorded as the hottest on record for the Ocean State. That is according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. It was also the second hottest July for the entire globe. However, that is not the only hot news in Rhode Island.

The sizzling Cumberland Little League National team is one game away from going to Williamsport, PA for the Little League World Series.  They play Fairfield, CT in the regional final tomorrow night at 7:00 pm in Bristol, CT. The game will be broadcast live on ESPN.

This is all possible because of a come from behind victory last night in a game against the team from Vermont. Jack Edwards made the call of the winning homer for NESN. (I apologize for the advertisement in the front of the call, but I couldn’t find a version without the branding.)

Let’s hope we see these youngsters continue to the World Series.

Teaching Providence Students about Real Estate

Today was Career Day at Residential Properties. We hosted two career-oriented high school students, Pamela Gonzalez and Paola Peña. Through the Volunteer in Providence Schools (VIPS) organization, the Classical High School students gave us the opportunity to show them what they could expect to do in the real estate industry. We spent the morning with them, and, hopefully, they departed with a well rounded perspective of what to anticipate working in real estate and relocation.

Personally, I look forward to this event every year, it’s a great opportunity to introduce students to our industry and provide them with first-hand knowledge of what they would expect by choosing a career in real estate. Liz Messier, Director of Relocation Services, joined me in guiding the students through a typical day in real estate. We were introduced to this program through the Rotary of Providence.

Liz was shadowed by Paola Peña, and immersed her in the Relocation Division of the company. Paola learned how Liz communicates and delivers our relocation services message to corporate relocation clients.

Pamela Gonzalez followed me for the morning. I showed her how we would present a few of the homes listed by Residential Properties and taught her how to handle showing a house to prospective buyers. We also went to the Cumberland Office to meet my sales team and see how a typical real estate office operates.

VIPS is an award winning non-profit educational organization dedicated to enabling our city’s public school students to succeed in school and build a good foundation for their future. We were fortunate to have been given this opportunity by VIPS to provide these exceptional students with knowledge of a career path our agents have chosen, allowing them to begin deciding what they want in a career.
