For the eleventh year, the Providence Rotary Club is holding their annual fund raising event – the street painting festival.  This year the venue is the Bank of America Skating Center right next to Burnside Park.  This will provide a nice smooth surface for the artist.  The Rotary is hoping that many more people will attend this year’s event, and the weather is expected to be cooperative.  There is a pool of over $3,000 for prizes to the various artists.

Residential Properties has sponsored a square again this year and Cumberland Manager, Holly Applegate, made an appearance with local street painting artist Mike MaCauley on the Rhode Show to promote the event.  Holly and relocation director, Elizabeth Messier, are members of the Providence Rotary Club.

The event is this Saturday, October 2nd, starting at 10:00 am and lasting into the late afternoon.  Several restaurants have signed up to provide food preparations for sampling.

Proceeds from the festival benefit the Providence Rotary Charities Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization. The foundation makes grants each year to organizations that enrich the lives of underprivileged children in and around Providence.

At Residential Properties, we are firmly invested in communities throughout Rhode Island and take notice when positive changes are made. This fall, private schools around the state are taking strides to improve their programs and facilities. Although the variety of projects is extensive, all will be beneficial for students, staff and members of the community.

Gordon SchoolEast Providence, RI
A 12-month immersion program with Roger Williams University will help candidates for the Masters of Arts in teaching degree and elementary teacher certification obtain their goals. The curriculum emphasizes multicultural education and teaching for social justice. This is a great opportunity for Roger Williams students to gain valuable hands on experience working side by side with Gordon teachers.

St. Andrews SchoolBarrington, RI
Not only is theater a great way to meet people in your community, but is also helpful for improving public speaking skills. Having recently moved from Providence to Barrington, The All Childrens Theater is working to build up St. Andrews Performing Arts Program and will hold eight-week after school programs for children 4-15 this fall. Community theater rehearsals will go on throughout the school year, with performances planned for the spring.

Moses Brown SchoolProvidence, RI
Strengthening students connections in the broader world, Moses Brown will spend the year focusing on their global stewardship program. From the early learning program to grade 12, this program is intended to develop skills to live and lead in the 21st century.

Pennfield SchoolPortsmouth, RI
It’s never too early to develop an interest in languages and science. This year, a Spanish and science learning program will be available to Pennfield School’s youngest students. A basic introduction to these subjects will be taught in visiting nursery and pre-K schools and more time will be spent in the community garden, teaching students where fruits and vegetables come from.

St. George’s SchoolNewport, RI
Encouraging students to spend more time reading and studying, the St. George’s library is undergoing an $8 million dollar renovation and addition project. This new complex will be ready for the 2011-2012 school year and will no doubt offer the students state-of-the-art means to access literary and online resources.

Located across the East Bay and Providence areas, these 5 schools are working hard to improve the quality of learning for their students. From capital improvements to new fields of study, these innovations will no doubt make a significant difference in their communities.

This week Rich and Steve will have David  Dequattro from  RGB Architects offering his insights into how an architect can add value to any building project from a simple yet sustainable remodeling job to building your dream home.  And if it is a dream home you are after, Elizabeth Cournoyer from our Barrington office will showcase a great spot to build on Adams Point in Barrington.

Barrington is near and dear to my heart, since it was my childhood home and where I started my real estate career. Vacant property in this community is very special, and waterfront property is becoming rare. To paraphrase Mark Twain, “Land, they are not making it anymore.” And this is one of the last lots on Adams Point.

Talking with Elizabeth about the property, she mentioned that the location is a serene and idyllic setting for a home looking out over Smith’s Cove. The sunsets are wonderful and you can spend hours relaxing while you watch the boats make their way out into Narragansett Bay. And since it is raw land ready for building, you have a clean slate for a design suitable to you.
